Traumatic Brain Injuries
Neurofeedback for TBIs and concussions
Do you need support after experiencing a concussion or a traumatic brain injury?
“I’ve had a traumatic brain injury and I need more support in recovery”
There are a lot of reasons why someone might need additional support after a traumatic brain injury or concussion. Oftentimes, we are left with pretty yucky symptoms like: brain fog, inability to pay attention, headaches and other neurological symptoms.
When a TBI or concussion happen, you’ve got a lot of other things to attend to in your recovery. You might struggle to stay organized, attention all your appointments or feel like you are performing well at work. It can leave you frustrated and helpless at getting every-day tasks done.
When we are living with brain fog and the other uncomfortable symptoms of a concussion or TBI, we can feel helpless to change our experiences. It’s important to take a holistic approach to your recovery. That brain of yours needs some love and care as it tries to recover after such a painful event.
If you are recovering from a traumatic brain injury, then NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback can help you train your brain to be more focused and show more mental acuity.
Do you struggle to know how to help yourself begin to recover after a TBI?
“I know I need to give my brain time to heal, but what else can I do?”
I hear this a lot as a licensed psychologist that specializes in trauma (which sometimes includes Traumatic Brain Injuries). We know we need to give ourselves some time to heal but we also want to help ourselves along the way.
Non-linear neurofeedback is an excellent option for someone that is trying to prioritize their recovery. Think of neurofeedback like brain training. It’s simply taking snapshots of your brain and then reflecting it back to you, so your brain can do what it does best— self-correct. You might think of this like physical training but for a TBI or concussion.
NeurOptimal® is a safe option even if you’re on medications or working with other modalities to support your ongoing recovery. This can simply add some extra training to your recovery plan. We’ve used NeurOptimal® to help athletes recover from head injuries/concussions, make more mind/body connections to perfect their craft and improve emotional regulation skills (for staying calm in the midst of stress).
NeurOptimal® does not require a diagnosis and it can help with overall mental fitness and improve:
Mental flexibility
Stress management
Emotional regulation skills
Resilience and openness to feedback
Improved concentration and problem-solving
Focus and attention
Better ability to relate to others
Neurofeedback can be good for your whole family.
NeurOptimal® is a professional-grade non-linear neurofeedback system. It’s a different kind of neurofeedback than the older systems and really makes neurofeedback easy to do and approachable for the entire family. You may have someone specific in mind (yourself, your kid, your partner), but the whole family can use the unit and benefit from it.
Essentially, NeurOptimal® is helping the brain self-correct by giving it really helpful information. Just think about what the brain is doing when you are learning a new task. When you fail at that task at the beginning, your brain marks this as a “difference” and self-corrects so you can continue to do better each time you try the new task. NeurOptimal® is marking the “different” signals your central nervous system is sending from your brain and giving that information back to the brain so that we can learn from that information and self-correct.
Have more questions?
Can i do neurofeedback while taking medications?
You can absolutely do neurofeedback while on meds. In over 50k NeurOptimal® sessions that have been conducted this year alone, there have been no noted side effects with medications.
Do I come to the office for treatment?
Nope, the NeurOptimal® system is so easy to use that we ship it to your home. We can walk you through the (very easy) set up or you can follow our printed instructions. We send you everything that you need to get started.
How long are each of the sessions?
Each session is 33.5 minutes. There’s relaxing music playing during the session, while the neurofeedback system does all the work at giving your brain helpful information. We can also provide you with some movies to watch if you need more entertainment.
What exactly do you do in a neurofeedback session?
I personally get work done. I set myself up and then to work on as much as I can get done during the 33.5 minute session. Sometimes I’m answering emails, watching videos, or writing blog posts. You just need the headphones in one ear for it to work.
What is a “brain map” and do I need one?
A brain map is used by linear neurofeedback systems, but we use non-linear neurofeedback and don’t need a brain map to get started. You simply start the system up and get to brain training.
