Frequently Asked Questions

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is brain training with a computer-aided device that monitors the brain’s activities. The brain has an incredible system for learning and self-correcting. NeurOptimal neurofeedback gives your brain helpful feedback about how it is functioning in order for it to be more flexible and resilient. It’s very easy to set up and it’s not added or subtracting anything from your brain. It’s just measuring and reflecting information back.

How does neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback works by monitoring the changes in the electrical patterns of your brain (without adding or taking away anything from the brain— no electrical shocks here!) The system reflects the information it’s gathering back to your brain in order for your brain to self-correct. When there’s any sudden changes in the electrical patterns of your brain, the music (all built into the system) will pause and this helps you come back to the present moment. It’s natural self-correction at its best.

I’m busy! Do I just sit there during a session?

I’m my most productive while using our neurofeedback systems. It’s 33.5 minutes of uninterrupted productivity for me. You can answer emails, watch videos, work, journal, or even sleep. You just need to be relatively still (you have sensors attached) and have at least one headphone in at all times (that’s how your brain gets the feedback). It’s very simple and it’s the best part of my day.

Are there any side effects to neurofeedback training?

NeurOptimal only reflects the brain activity, which allows your brain to make the changes it needs. It’s natural and completely medicine-free. It’s non-invasive and does not require any special preparations before using the system. There are no known side effects of NeurOptimal, but other neurofeedback systems have shown some side effects.

Is neurofeedback safe for all ages?

Neurofeedback can be used at all ages with a variety of different issues that one might want to address. It’s non-invasive and safe.

Can I continue to take medications while doing neurofeedback?

NeurOptimal conducted over 50k sessions just last month (August 2023) and about half of the participants continue to take their medications while doing neurofeedback. We recommend that you speak with your doctor about changing your medication before making those changes on your own.

Will these results last?

Think of brain training like going to the gym for your brain. It’s getting your brain in shape for better sleep, more emotional regulation, and better executive functioning (like concentration, focus, and mental agility). The results are long-lasting and you might want to revisit neurofeedback monthly, yearly, or as needed when you’d like more brain fitness at your disposal. You can expect

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last about 33 minutes, but a lot of our clients have a hard time sitting still that long at the very beginning (especially when their kids are brain training). Don’t worry! Even 5 minutes of neurofeedback can be helpful and this is a great way to measure how much longer they are able to sit after each session. You don’t have to just stare at the screen the entire time. You can work, watch a movie, or sleep. As long as you have the headphones in, you’re good!
